Candle Magick
Anita Burns
With Special Thanks to Carol Ann Shang for her assistance

You may have performed your first act of candle magic as a small child. Blowing out the tiny candles on your first birthday cake and making a wish is based on the three magical principals of concentration, will power and visualization. In simple terms, the child who wants his wish to come true has to concentrate (blow out the candles), visualize the end result (make the wish) and hope that it will come true( will power). Candle Magick works in much the same way. -

Candle magick is one of the simplest of the natural magickal arts. It requires little ritual and few ceremonial artifacts. The supplies for candle magic can easily be obtained. And candle magick can be practiced anywhere.

Once you have purchased (or made) your ritual candle it has to be oiled or 'dressed' before burning. The purpose of dressing the candle is to establish a psychic link between it and yourself through a primal sensory experience. Physically touching the candle during the dressing procedure charges it with your personal vibrations and focuses your desire into the wax. The candle becomes an extension of your mental power and life energy.

When you dress your candles for magical use, imagine it as a psychic magnet with a north and a south pole. Rub the oil into the candle beginning at the top, or north end, and work downwards to the half-way point. Always brush in the same direction downwards. This process is then repeated by beginning at the bottom, or south end, and working up to the middle.

The best type of oils for dressing candles are natural and can be obtained from magick or new age supply stores. From the Source's oils are of the purest quality and are used by practitioners throughout the world.

The color of your candles should be compatible with your magickal purpose.
Use them alone or in combinations for more complex purposes.

After you have dressed your candles. Light them, keeping your intent and wishes in mind. You can even write out your desired outcome on a piece of paper and burn it in the candle flame. Either leave the candle(s) lit until they burn out or snuff them after a half hour or so (don’t blow). Relight them the next day and repeat the written desires and burn the paper. TIP: The waning moon helps move things out of your life—blocks, obstacles, people, etc. The waxing moon helps bring things into your life—money, love, objects, etc. Time your candle ritual accordingly for the most effectiveness.
