Seances are a gathering of people with the intent of contacting spirits of those who have passed over. Usu ally there is a medium in the lead, who goes into a semi-trance and brings the spirits through to speak with the attendees of the seance.
The word seance is from the French, which means session or meeting. It was first used in the spiritual sense in 1845 in England during the heyday of the Spiritualist movement. But seances, under other names have been held from antiquity. We know of them as far back as the 3rd Century.
In early seances, the spirits would communicate with raps, taps, or by tipping tables and tapping out messages with a table leg hitting the floor. Sometimes the spirits would appear as lights, generate odors and fragrances, and make the room cold.
When seances became very popular, charlatans moved in with elaborate trickery to milk the gullible public of their cash.
In truth, a seance is often more effective than a single person when contacting spirits because group energy, focused with intent is very powerful.
How to hold a Traditional Spiritualist Seance:
Hold it in a comfortable, quiet place where there are few distractions of sound, lights, or possibility of interruption.
Flowers, especially white roses, are said to attract spirits.
Everyone should sit either around a table or in a circle on the floor.
Candles are used to attract spirits to the Light.
It’s best to have a spirit in mind that you want to contact. A loved-one who has passed over is ideal.
Don’t have music playing. And, of course, no cell phones, telephones, television or radio.
Some seances have camera film, or Polaroid film in the room that later develops with the picture of spirits. A digital camera with NO FLASH has also been known to have some interesting results.
Room temperature or ventilation should be comfortable. Some spirits will make the room temperature colder; others make it warmer.
Seances can be held day or night. The spirits don’t care because they don’t live in linear time.
Be sure that everyone is comfortable and can sit for the entire seance without having get up to go to the bathroom, have a drink of water or smoke.
Decide where everyone is to sit. Sometimes, energies are better if you can alternate, male, female, male, female, but it’s not necessary.
Some people use Ouija Board during the seance. If you have a medium who can use it without a partner, it is an interesting addition.
Join hands to raise energy for a moment, then let go and sit quietly. Spirits are not enabled by hand joining. This was propagated more by Hollywood than fact.
Start with a prayer or short meditation, asking for protection and for only the positive spirits to join your group. You can also visualize a white light surrounding the room.
Although the medium is the moderator, anyone in the room willing to let go and relax may have their own experience of the spirits.
Begin with everyone taking a couple of deep breaths. Eyes may be closed or open. Eyes closed or defocused at the center of the table seems to bring the most profound results. A crystal ball in the center of the table can act as a good focal point.
As the medium calls the spirit you may experience noises, cool air blowing, a tickling sense of touch, smells of perfume, cigars, cooking odors, or the table lifting.
The medium verifies who the spirit is and who they came to talk to.
Messages are then given, then the person connected to the spirit asks questions. Only ask the question once, especially if you don’t get the answer you want. Don’t keep asking.
Ideally, each person at the table will get to speak to a spirit. This may not be possible if there are too many people or some there don’t have spirits they want to speak with.
Sometimes spirits may come uninvited. In this case, thank them, and tell them to move on. Some spirits are talkative, others just say a few words, then leave. Some answer questions while others only deliver messages.
There is no set time limit for a seance. The spirits generally determine when they are through, or the medium will break when the time is right.
Sometimes, several spirits all want to talk at once. In this case, ask that only one speak at a time.
Interestingly, not all spirits are human. Some are animals, perhaps pets who have crossed over. They speak in visual language and feelings instead of language.
Some are other non-humans that may come through are angels, ETs, or inter-dimensional beings. Sometimes spirit guides will come through.
Some come to talk about their deaths, especially with murders or suicides.
Some speak foreign languages that are converted to thought forms and an understandable language through the medium’s mind.
If, rarely, a negative, angry spirit gets through the defensive wall of light, simply tell, in a firm voice, to leave immediately. If that doesn’t work, call on the Archangel Michael. It’s one of his main jobs to transport spirits of this sort away. Keep in mind, however, that someone there may have attracted this dysfunctional spirit for the drama and attention. Know who you invite to your group.
Sometimes a person can become fall into a trance state during a seance. Just allow the person time to wake-up slowly after the seance is over. They will probably a message for the group.
Sometimes, spirits don’t leave after the séance. They can stay and return in your dream time or in your home with additional messages, or decide to haunt your house, or attach to your energy field. Be sure, when ending your seance that you clear the room, and have all the spirits return to their own world.
