ANNOUNCING AN ADDITION TO THE SACRED JOURNEY 09 RETREAT....
NATIVE AMERICAN SWEAT LODGE
In the North American Native American tradition, the sweat lodge (also called sweat house, medicine lodge, or inip, is an important ritual. There are various styles of sweat lodges, but they generally consist of a a domed or oblong hut, covered with skins, blankets, or fir branches. Stones are heated in an exterior fire and then brought into the lodge where they are placed in a central pit in the ground.
During the ceremony, the participants sit around the stone pit. The leader of the ceremony (pourer), receives the glowing hot stones from the fire keeper and places them in the pit. When enough stones have been placed in the lodge, the pourer closes the door and pours water on top of the stones to fill the lodge with steam. This happens multiple times.
One origin myth says that the Creator gave the lodge to the people as a way to directly pray or talk with the Creator. The lodge represents the womb, that gives birth and life, and it provides
important teachings to the people.
Entering the lodge is a sacred event that provides a cleansing of the body, spirit, heart, and mind. Respect is given to the Creator, the lodge, the fire, the medicines, the animals, the four directions, the elders, the participants, and the ceremonies.
Thanks are given for the fire’s warmth, the importance of the rocks, the animals, and the plants.
Thanks are given for all the elements of nature that provide us with life and survival.
This is a time for reflection, catharsis, inner change, and opening to your heart and soul.
Our Sacred Journey Sweat Lodge will be conducted in the ways of tradition. It is a sacred time to heed your inner voice and guidance from your highest souce. Much will be revealed, released, and resolved in the lodge as you follow your inner path to its source.
THE LODGE, AS WITH ALL OF OUR ACTIVITIES, IS OPTIONAL. IF YOU DON'T WISH TO PARTICIPATE, THERE WILL BE AN ALTERNATE ACTIVITY - NATURE WALK WITH DRUMMING.
Traditional sweatlodges require modesty. Clothing is required. Men may be shirtless. Because of the heat and humidity, it is recommended for women to wear long skirts and loose tops.
Also, the lodge is not so hot that it is unbearable, in other words, not like a sauna, but enough for purification.
